TNO & Demcon to provide enabling technology for the world’s largest telescope

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is creating the world’s largest telescope. It has selected TNO to provide a key enabling technology that will allow the telescope to produce better views of the universe than have ever been possible. In the project, TNO will collaborate with Demcon Focal as a major sub-contractor. With the help of TNO’s laser guide star launch telescope technology, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will provide insight […]

Animation of the ADALAM project

The ADALAM project is developing an inline measurement system and supporting technologies/methodologies to increase the accuracy of laser-based micro milling. Recently Focal developed in close cooperation with the Adalam partners; DEMCON, IPT Fraunhofer and Sill Optics a proof of principle of the inline measurement system. This allows us to characterize the measurement system and to optimize its performance. As a test, a part of the Swedisch Krone was scanned. A […]

Slim2 project

Dutch companies IMS, VIRO and Focal have started the SLIM2 project to develop new production means and methods for Smart Industry. Production companies need to be able to produce in a flexible manner and swiftly anticipate on changing market demands. Thus, they need intelligent and flexible production machines to assemble their products, software to control the complete production process and vision technology to guarantee the quality of the products. SLIM2 will result […]

Retinal Hand Held Oximeter – The Corimapper

Focal and DEMCON developed a prototype retinal oximeter with a hand held functionality. The Corimapper simultaneously images the fundus with two well defined wavelength bands. The light absorbance is used to estimate the vessel oxygenation saturation.  A NIR led light source is used to align the camera with the retina and Xe flash light source is used to generate a short light pulse of few milliseconds.  We are very proud that […]

Work in progress: Smart Micromachining

The European ADALAM project aims to develop a sensor-based adaptive micromachining system for zero-failure manufacturing, based on ultrashort-pulse laser ablation and a novel depth measurement sensor, together with advanced data analysis software and automated system calibration routines. The technology developed will generate new solutions for manufacturing of high-quality and innovative products, such as adaptive micromilling of 2.5D structures, defect detection and removal, and texturing of complex tool features. Miniaturisation, advanced highperformance materials and functional surface structures are all drivers […]
