Full quality assurance and process optimization is needed for the increased demand for fuel cell parts.

Demcon Focal developed and realized inspection systems for the quality control of graphite and metal bipolar plates. The inspection system uses the CAD design as input and compares this with the measured features. The feedback of the inspection system can be used to optimize the fabrication process.

For the graphite bipolar plate inspection system we measure the dimensions, warpage and thickness. For the metal bipolar plates we detect plate defects such as: scratches, digs and laser welding artefacts.

Typical methods we use are:

  • Chromatic confocal
  • Low coherence interferometry
  • Reflectance surface imaging
  • Depth from shadow
