About the project

Laser communication is a key enabler for future high data rate communication between satellites, aerial vehicles and ground stations. For successful laser communication over several thousands of kilometers distance, point of the laser beam between the transmitter and the receiver needs to be controlled with a precision down to a few microradians. The FSM (fine steering mirror) was specially designed for laser communication to enable this level of precision pointing. For more information visit the website of FSO Instruments.


TNO and Demcon have developed a fine steering mirror (FSM) for satellite communication (LEO-LEO, LEO-GEO)


  • 1 kHz bandwidth
  • Maximum +/- 1° mechanical deflection of the mirror
  • >95% reflection over broad wavelength range
  • 20 mm mirror diameter
