Bipolar plates for fuel cells are at the heart of Hydrogen conversion into electric power. Laser welding is an effective joining method for thin metallic bipolar plates to achieve reliable seal and fulfill the requirements for fuel cell stacks. However, distortion caused by the welding heat will produce errors in bipolar plates. Therefore quality control of the weld is essential and is time consuming.
Demcon Focal uses different vision methods to perform a proper quality control for high volume production. We use blacklight, reflectance transformation images, triangulation and others to visualize the different artefacts, like pinhole, missing weld-line, scratches, digs etc. Vision algorithms are used to classify the observed artefacts.
